The Canadian Homebuilders Association has awarded Pride Homes by Fred Hendriks Inc two prestigious awards.

“We were quite pleased to win both awards, considering it’s the first time we’ve entered,” said Fred. “They’re called the National SAM awards... you could call it the Oscars for Canadian home builders and renovators.”

Pride Homes won for exceptional work in two categories – Best Whole House Renovation, and Best Addition, for its indoor pool addition entry. Both projects are in West Niagara.

Fred’s been in the business for 34 years, having learned from his father. By age 22 he worked independently on projects.

Although the awards were for designs at the higher end of the price spectrum, neither assignment was typical.

“We don’t specialize in expensive projects,” he said. “We provide our clients with kitchen, bathroom, and basement renovations, as well as family room and second storey additions.”

For many people it’s more feasible to renovate than to build new. Especially when you like the area you’re living in. Plus you don’t have to worry about the additional costs of landscaping and other aspects.

When a client first calls, they usually don’t have drawn plans.

“I walk in, gather their ideas, take notes, and go back to my office to create the space they’re looking for. If they like what I’ve sketched, we contact an architect.”

Fred’s years of experience as a hands-on homebuilder help with designing and pricing renovations. His wife Cindy administers bookkeeping and helps clients make design selections and decisions. Project Coordinator Robert Koschewski supervises projects – lining up subcontractors and crew, making sure material flows at the proper time, and communicating with clients.

“I enjoy doing those things as well, and clients still like to see me,” said Fred. “But with our company growing my job is to concentrate on securing new work.”

The Pride homes crew – lead, journeymen, and apprentice carpenters – is responsible for doing all the indoor renovations. They politely explain their work to clients. And they make sure the house is neat, tidy, and safe before they leave at the end of the day.

“Our staff are on-site all the time, which ensures quality control and customer confidence,” Fred said. “Our company is a mid-size company – we’re not too large to do smaller jobs, and not too small to take on million-dollar projects.”
